Cool Shingles

Cool Shingles

With the unrelenting heat of the Southern California sun beating down on your roof all day, it’s wise to choose a roofing solution that repels those UV rays away from your home or business – the solution: cool shingles!!

As part of our green and solar roofing options, Ferguson & Melvin offers cool shingles for energy savings and increased comfort indoors.

To over-simplify, light-colored shingles reflect heat and sunlight, while dark-colored shingles absorbs it.

Dark-colored roofs will only serve to attract more heat into your home, working counter-productively against your air conditioning system. That means you pay more in energy costs than you have to.

With cool asphalt shingles, the lighter colors and new granule technology act as a repellant for the sun’s rays, keeping your home or business cooler and saving you money!!

The Technology

A cool roof is a roofing system that delivers higher solar reflectance, which is the ability to reflect the visible, infrared, and ultraviolet wavelengths of the sun, reducing heat transfer to the structure.  It also delivers higher thermal emittance, which means it can radiate absorbed, or non-reflected solar energy.

Historically, cools roofs have been mostly used for commercial flat roof applications, and they have been white.  However, with the development of cool roof shingles in recent years, it’s now possible to achieve Energy Star qualified levels of solar reflectivity even in darker, rich colors.

Why Cool Shingles?

Here are some benefits to cool shingles:

  • Improved occupant comfort
  • Reduced maintenance costs
  • Increased life span of the roof
  • Reduction in urban heat islands and associated smog
  • Reduction in roofing waste in landfills
  • Lower AC costs in the summer
  • Savings on peak electricity demands
  • Reduces air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Keeps you cooler indoors

Our crews are highly trained in the latest installation practices and techniques associated with cool roofs, which are highly reflective, thanks to emissive materials. During a typical summer day, the surface temperature of dark roofs can reach up to 190 degrees Fahrenheit at their peak, whereas cool roofs peak at 100 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This increase in temperature will cost you money in higher utility bills!

In addition, when you install a cool roof, you may also qualify for rebates and tax credits from the government or local utility company.
